June 2, 2010: Federal Fisheries Closures
June 2, 2010 - Information about NOAA's expansion of the federal fisheries closures related to the Deepwater Horizon / BP Oil Spill. Effective beginning tonight at 6:00 pm Eastern Time the closure area will include portions of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary around the western portions of the Dry Tortugas. I have attached a map and the latest bulletin from NOAA Fisheries Southeast Regional Office. Additional information and updates about federal fisheries closures in the Gulf of Mexico are available at http://sero.nmfs.noaa.gov/deepwater_horizon_oil_spill.htm
As noted in the bulletin, "NOAA Fisheries Service strongly advises fishermen not to fish in areas where oil or oil sheens (very thin layers of floating oil) are present, even if those areas are not currently closed to fishing. All commercial and recreational fishing including catch and release is prohibited in the closed area; however, transit through the area is allowed."
