Local Buoy Bank Fundraiser

MOORING BUOY BANKS:  These are miniature models of the mooring buoy systems used within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and consist of a small buoy on a stand with Sanctuary brochures that give information about proper mooring buoy use. These models can be used to demonstrate the correct way to connect to a mooring. Donations are collected for the Sanctuary mooring buoy program by donors depositing funds in the buoy which becomes a locked bank. Sanctuary Friends collects the money which is used for specific purposes relating to buoy installation and maintenance support.

Why is it necessary to raise funds for this purpose? The National Marine Sanctuary Program depends upon Congressional funding to support the program budget. In stressful times such as these, many pressing concerns take priority and sanctuaries’ budgets are slim and do not fully support some of their many important programs that have been developed. The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary has traditionally avoided any kind of user fees although many other marine protected areas are now collecting fees from people who visit their waters. The only option the Sanctuary has to reduce their costs is to remove selected buoys from service and/or not increase the numbers available by adding more sites. The buoy banks help raise the funds that allow continuation of the mooring buoy program within the FKNMS.
